Know the HOW and WHY: A Guide for Specialized Training

Explaining The How and Why To A Client

Understanding the how and why of each movement is crucial, especially for older adults, individuals with challenges, and those with disabilities. Proper knowledge ensures safety, promotes health, and minimizes the risk of injury.

The Importance of Core Activation and Posture

Each exercise involves specific components like stance, posture, core activation, and biomechanics. These elements are vital for maintaining health and preventing injuries. For example, I once observed a member using a variation of a common exercise that raised some concerns. When I asked about their approach, they mentioned they had seen someone else—specifically a bodybuilder—performing it that way.

Even knowledgeable individuals can overlook proper techniques. I took the opportunity to break down the exercise with them, focusing on:

  1. Core Activation: In the position they adopted, core engagement was compromised, leading to a relaxed and potentially unsafe stance.

  2. Posture: We discussed how maintaining proper neck and back posture is essential. Improper alignment can easily strain the neck or spine, increasing the risk of injury.

The Fitness Industry's Trend Trap

It’s crucial to remember that the fitness industry is often driven by trends. New exercises and diets may garner attention, but safety can sometimes take a back seat. This can be especially true for new trainers eager to make a name for themselves. While they may not intend harm, it underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and understanding.

Take Control of Your Fitness Journey

Before engaging in any exercise, always consider the how and why:

  • How: Understand the mechanics of the movement. How does it impact your posture, core stability, and joint health?

  • Why: Know the purpose behind the exercise. What goals does it serve? How does it benefit your overall well-being?
